Modelling a Heaving Point-Absorber with a Closed-Loop Control System Using the DualSPHysics Code

The present work addresses the need for an efficient, versatile, accurate and open-source numerical tool to be used during design stage of wave energy converters (WECs). device considered here is heaving point-absorber developed tested by Sandia National Laboratories. smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, as implemented in DualSPHysics, proposed since its meshless approach presents some important advantages when simulating floating devices. dynamics power take-off system are also modelled coupling DualSPHysics with multi-physics library Project Chrono. A satisfactory matching between experimental results obtained for: (i) heave response forced via actuator; (ii) vertical forces acting on fixed under regular waves and; (iii) WEC action both actuator force. This proves ability simulate accurately fluid–structure interaction along WEC’s closed-loop control system. In addition, radiation models built from WAMIT compared plotting intrinsic impedance frequency domain, showing that SPH method can employed identification.
